There is something, though I know not what exactly, ineffably sad about this series of sketches.

I'm thinking it's really hopeful at the end when the character (in a panel we don't see) arrives someplace else and begins again, but I'm not sure I believe me when I tell myself that's what really happens.

Thanks for making me think. It hurts a little but it feels pretty good.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. It's been really interesting seeing different interpretations of this piece. My own intentions were pretty close to what Ted articulated; but part of the point was also about the escape that art/work/accomplishment/"that thing that you do" can give you from internal criticism. But then again, that raft doesn't look so sturdy, so maybe it's not as optimistic as it seems.
